| Eco friendly Management of fruit fly using pheromone trap | Description: During the past few decades the atrocities of insect pests in crop has been evolved as a major area of concern for the farming community s well as the agriculture scientists. Consequently, to combat this issue a large number of molecules have been generated in the laboratories which can effectively control a broad spectrum of insect pests but the consistent rise in the use of these chemicals are proved to be fatal for human beings in a multifarious way starting from affecting the verve systems to even make deteriorated overall health of a person.
In a new dimension of eco-friendly pest control arena use of mechanical control has played a pivotal role as a useful component of Integrated Pest Management. Pheromone trap is an effective mechanical control tool for fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis and Bactrocera cucurbitae) which is used to allure the male insects by using female hormones like chemicals I.e methyl eugenol and cue lure. Location of implementation: This technology was first disseminated from DGKVK in the villages of Nowdapanur GP, Berhampore Block and Binkar GP,Beldanga 1 Block within 70 farmers in 2020. After a season most of the farmers were happy and they reported that with the use of this technology at least 30 to 40 percent cost has been curtailed in terms of pesticides use. Having witnessed the in-hand results of this technology the farmers of surrounding villages have approached the progressive farmers who were endowed with this technology already. As this trap is mostly used in cucurbitaceous vegetables and mango which are abundantly grown on spring-summer and summer season respectively, the newcomers were willing to go through with this technological intervention on the summer 2021. DGKVK has conducted several sessions covering at least 250 on related awareness as well as skill development training on this particular technology and the know-how of using this trap in their own field. Moreover, in the absence of any other authorized manufacturing stakeholders of this trap, DGKVK has taken the sole responsibility to provide the traps to the newly trained farmers. Before the summer of 2022, the keenness of the farmers has reached to an unexpected level of zenith where the interested group of people (400 nos of farmers) came from at least 25 to 30 new villages covering three to four new adjacent blocks. This pace of horizontal expansion is undoubtedly beyond our prediction and obviously it can be concluded that this technology has gained a wider expansion and a larger end users in murshidabad.
*Now a days 15 to 18% vegetable growers knows about fruit fly trap and also Mango cultivators use this fruit-fly traps. |
